Weekend

Phew! It's been a while since the last post. So thought of starting small to kill that inertia.

There's nothing better than describing my weekend.

Saturday

Some contemplation, failed plans; yet made up for it in a small way.

Sunday

Gave lethargy a backseat and finally bought something i really wanted.
Only 3 more items to check off the Must Buy list.

All is well that ends well :)

On Murphy's Laws

It is incredibly amazing how things tend to go wrong when you least expect them to.

A professor once said that Murphy's Laws work overtime in the advertising industry. I have seen these laws in action on numerous occasions in daily life. Especially when i wait for a fast train and 3 slow trains pass by another platform only to realize later that the fast train is running late!
Or cigarette smoke which finds you no matter which way the wind is blowing.

Things have a knack of going missing when you most need them. Like the keys when you wish to lock the door.

There are so many variables. And we can't control all of them, can we?

Murphy's Laws, in a way, teach us to embrace uncertainty (to a certain extent, if you will).

And what's life without a bit of uncertainty? :)

Insomnia

They say that insomnia is a sign of strength.
Well... if that is true, i must be really strong!

Not sure what is keeping me awake at this hour... but something definitely needs attention.
I am on my way to figure it out.

zzzZZZ! ;)

Google Doodle

Google has innovative ways of celebrating occasions. They come up with lovable doodles on their homepage to mark event anniversaries and birthdays of celebrities.

Today's doodle is one of the best doodles ever. It celebrates the 96th birthday of the late guitar pioneer Les Paul.

You can create your own tunes by pointing your mouse at the guitar strings. If you are in the US, you can your keyboard to create tunes. Alternatively, you could also try the google.com website. What's more, you could also use the record function (by pressing the lower part of the second 'g' in the Google logo) to save your original compositions, however this currently only available in the US.

Just try Google's homepage - you'll love it!

P.S. In case you missed it, here's the link to the doodle. Have fun :)

Left brain v/s Right brain

Yes, we have all heard the same old stories about left brained v/s right brained people.

And we don't want to be told that the left brain stands for rational thinking and analytical ability.
We already know that the right brain is for creativity and expression.
Enough of all that!

Here's a great Mercedes Benz print campaign which will do all the talking:

http://www.fuelyourcreativity.com/left-brain-vs-right-brain-advertising/

You like it, don't you?

Mahindra Stallio

There were many ads which i liked and wanted to write about; but for some reason or the other, didn't.
One of those was the Mahindra Stallio campaign which had roped in Aamir Khan.

The ads were simple and stood out of the clutter.
Just in case you missed them, here are the links:
Ad 1
Ad 2

I like the one which ends with a memorable "Iss vigyapan me mere dwara kiye gaye har scene ko aap aasaani se kar sakte hain! Drive safely."
It sends out a message that for many, a bike is more of utility than thrills.

But somehow, the product didn't deliver - gearbox problems, other issues and reports of lean sales were out in the news.

This brings us back to the basics - the core is the product! And the CUSTOMER who uses it has certain expectations (unstated needs). These have to be met at any cost. Choosing to ignore these needs is going to get you nowhere no matter how much hype and hoopla you surround around the product (read marketing).

However, as recently reported in a prominent daily, the glitch has been fixed and soon production will be back to normal.
Let's hope for the best...

Blackberry boys

Here is one of my favorite ads. Repositions the brand in a simple yet effective communication.
Nice memorable jingle!

"We're the Blackberry boys..."

What a company really needs!

A meeting is an event at which the minutes are kept and the hours are lost.
How true!
Most of us have attended a meeting at some point in our life. And during the meeting, we were either wondering why it was being held or desperately waiting for it to end.
I came across a funny ad that takes a dig at corporate meetings - i am sure you'll relate to this.

A senior executive tries to explain what their company really needs:
One-on-one! Repositioning! Change!

Enjoyed it, didn't you?
Just ensure that you are not on the receiving end :)

Social farting

Here's a really funny definition i couldn't resist posting.

"Some people have a knack for saying something so inappropriate, inconsiderate, or crude, showing so little appreciation for the immediate context that it is the social equivalent of passing gas in church, or at a wedding or a funeral. I call it a social fart."
  ~ Edward Hampton

So mind your social farts guys! :)

If you don’t stop reading, I’ll start writing

First of all, i’d like to thank my roomie for inspiring me to write this.

Sleep evades you when you desperately try to chase it. But you still keep trying in the vain hope that eventually you’ll fall asleep. Ah! What would we do without hope?

A conversation i had with a friend comes to mind. He said, “All great writers/artists were troubled souls.” I wonder if there is any substance to this argument. Even as i think about it, that statement seems to make a lot of sense. In order to produce a great work of art, the artist (read author/creator) has to go through something equally moving. This, i feel, gives the artist a burning desire to create something. It almost lights up a fire within which subsides only after that feeling/emotion is given an outlet in the form of expression (prose, sketch, tune, et al). Personally, i have found that the best of my blogs have been written when i was either disturbed or excited about something (this is not to suggest that I’ve produced master pieces ;). What i mean is that i was nowhere near my normal self when i started writing those ‘good’ posts.

I wish there were a switch which could be used to turn on the creative brain (right brain). Something like an ACTIVATE_RIGHT() function followed by GET_CREATIVE() would be really helpful. On second thought, wouldn’t that have led to a commoditization of creativity? Had that really happened, I wouldn’t have liked it for sure.

Probably that is why creativity commands a premium. Or does it?

Not all creative endeavors are ‘successful’. And what exactly defines a successful piece of art?
The monetary value assigned to it? The satisfaction the artist derives from the work? The pleasure the patrons derive from it? Or a bit of all these? Is there a formula which defines the right mix/blend of all these?

I wonder...

Objectivity

Objectivity: How do i define it?

Is it the intersection of my reality & your reality?
When my world & your world seem to agree, does that mean that both of us are looking at the same thing objectively?  What if my own world is not objective enough?
Wait a minute. Did i say objective “enough”?
Now where did that come from? Does objectivity exist in varying degrees?
And how did the word ‘objective’ come to mind?
Probably from ‘subjective’. And what exactly is subjective? Guess it means something that exists in one’s mind. And since it exists only in the mind, it is not ‘real’. So when we are being subjective about something it simply means that you & i look @ the same thing but perceive it differently in our minds.
Going by this definition of subjective, ‘objective’ could be defined as that which exists outside the mind; reality “as it is”. But who defines reality?
Assuming there’s an authority who defines it, won’t he run the risk of being subjective himself?

Answers anyone?

Looking forward

As another year went by
I couldn’t help but think why
2009 just whiffed past
365 days did it even last?
And after the annual review
Observations I had a few

Last year:
We googled more & thought less
So had more data & less information
Hence more intelligence & less intellect
We had more of Facebook & less of face-to-face
Online most of the time, but not inline with our own selves
Most of us were learning to earn while a few were yearning to learn
We knew exactly what was good for them; we knew not what was good for us.

So in the New Year my friend
I wish we reverse this trend
And go ahead with steely resolve
With the hope that we’ll certainly evolve!

Is thinking really an option?

Is thinking really an option? I wonder...

You have all the knowledge in the world. But what do you make of it?
Can you apply what you know when needed?
You know what intelligence is. You can go on & on about "intellect v/s intelligence".

But does it really matter?
The thought is scary...

Chinese food

Ever had Chinese food in Mumbai?
Chances are that 9 times out of 10 you'd encounter a guy from the North Eastern parts of our country serving Chinese food. This is especially true if it's a road side stall.
Forget road side eateries - i have seen this in decent hotels and even in one of the Mainland China restaurants.

I actually find this strange.
Do the owners really think they'd convince their customers that they are being served 'authentic' Chinese food? Or is it just for the ambience?

Anyway, since no one's complaining, it seems to work well for everyone involved.
Win-win-win!

62 years of independence

"The British left six decades too early" - goes a comment in a newspaper on 15th August.
What did the writer actually mean? He spoke about Indians' lack of planning and how the Brits are better at planning and developing infrastructure. Fair point.

But what came to mind when i first read it was that the British could still rule India.
Sometimes one feels that India should have been 28 princely states (plus the Union territories) rather than one country. The reason i say this is because of our propensity for regionalism. It is always us v/s them, Biharis v/s Mumbaikars, South Indians v/s North Indians, ... Just take a look at the number of political parties in India and you get a sense of what is being said. And then there is IPL - Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Dare Devils, etc.
There is some glamour to it, isn't there?

Who is to blame for all this?
Politicians? You? Me?

Or is it the idea of Indianness?
Such a diverse country can't be described in a sentence. Or can it?
You can't describe it in terms of religion. Although Hindus are a majority, we should not forget that India’s Muslim population exceeded Pakistan’s (until at least the mid-1990s). Besides we have Sikhs, Christians, Jews, etc. Not language, as the constitution officially recognizes 18 languages (God know how many dialects these have). Not even ethnicity - India has been invaded by too many ethnic groups in the past; so the chances of belonging to a single race are out of question.

All said and done, what matters most is that the world's largest democracy works. How it works - nobody seems to know, but it does work. Adman & lyricist Prasoon Joshi puts it well: There's a rhythmic chaos in India. There is something that binds us all - the clichéd "Unity in diversity" comes to mind. We have a Sikh PM who got that position thanks to an Italian. We love Shahrukh Khan.

After 62 years of independence, we still have problems of poverty, illiteracy, unemployment, population growth, etc. Despite all these issues, I'm gung-ho about young India. A confident India - ready to take on challenges head on. From MTNL to cell-phones, DD to DTH, restraint to indulgence, from bottling up to blogging, we have come a long way baby.

But we haven't arrived yet. We still have a long way to go. Let us all come together and bridge the gap between Bharath and India.

Leaves of Grass

Although i don't usually read poems, i happened to read one worth sharing. This one's by the American philosopher poet Walt Whitman.

Whoever you are holding me now in hand,
Without one thing all will be useless,
I give you fair warning before you attempt me further,
I am not what you supposed, but far different.
Who is he that would become my follower?
Who would sign himself a candidate for my affections?
The way is suspicious, the result uncertain, perhaps destructive,
You would have to give up all else, I alone would
expect to be your sole & exclusive standard,
Your novitiate would even then be long & exhausting,
The whole past theory of your life & all conformity to the lives around you would have to be abandoned,
Therefore release me now before troubling yourself
any further, let go your hand from my shoulders,
Put me down and depart on your way.

From "Leaves of Grass" by Walt Whitman.

Change is happiness

Have u seen the new Videocon ads?

The new logo is amazing - the green 'V' looks young and refreshing.
The font looks great too.
Really liked the ad - Chow mouw, chow mouw...
(For those who have not seen the ad, take a look @ this.)

And yes, change IS happiness :)

About writing

Just came across these words worth sharing:

Writing is a solitary occupation. Family, friends & society are the natural enemies of the writer. He must be alone, uninterrupted & slightly savage if he is to sustain and complete an undertaking.

How true! At least for me - the irresistible urge to write always creeps up when i m away from home.

Golden words by Shakespeare

This above all: To thine own self be true,
And it must follow as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man.

- William Shakespeare, Hamlet.

New Vodafone ads?

Did you notice the new Vodafone ads featuring the pug?
After the great Zoozoo ads, i don't understand why almost every other TV channel shows the new ads featuring the little gal and the adorable dog.

Yes, the pug (originally featured for Hutch) is back and very happy to help...

Is Vodafone trying to project a customer-centric image?
Maybe.

I love the new ads but would still like to see the Zoozoo ads.
